What is a Charter School?

June 30th, 2009 · No Comments · Thinking about Teaching

Before I began this whole process I didn’t know much about Charter schools so I figured others might not know either and would interested in learning more about them.

Charter schools are similar to public elementary or secondary schools in the United States but they do have some differences. Charter schools do receive public money but are often freed from some of the public schools rules, regulations, and statutes. In exchange for this freedom Charter schools are often held more accountable for producing certain results.

Charter schools do not charge tuition but do require parents to apply in order to have their children accepted and attend these schools. Often space can be limited at Charter schools and these schools will usually use a lottery based system for admissions.

There are Charter schools that provide a curriculum that focuses on a specific field such as arts or mathematics while others attempt to offer a better and more efficient general education then the public schools in that area.
